packing summer away

Slowly, we move inside. Green tomatoes are our new housemates and we watch them ripen on the every surface. The garden is dismantled. The beds prepped for garlic and winter rye. The cows make their last rotation on pasture. The second cutting of hay is finished. The chickens are given warm water in the morning to help them ease into their day. The pigs hut has been fetched from a nest of pigweed and burdock and filled with new bedding. Suddenly you find your dear old friend, Time, has started to visit again after months of having no idea where he went.

Today is the last day of summer. Autumn has already sunk into our bones. The first woodfires begin to impregnate the air. Now begins the final push to prepare for the cold ahead. Winter is coming.

  2. There's no place in the world where fall is more evident in the air and more beautiful in the earth than in New England. Looking forward to lots of winter updates already!

  4. I go into a small depression each year with the end of tomatoes - this year was earlier than last year. Luckily we still have squash and the fall crops. But still, fresh, warm, tomatoes....sigh.

Autumn is my favorite season but living in the tropics means I haven't experienced one in years. I hope to again at some point!

  7. Our kitchen is being taken over by our unripe tomatoes as well. But it's sooooo worth it!

    Have a great weekend.

  11. This post reminded me of one of my favorite quotes that immediately made me think of you & all you share on here, which I appreciate so much....
    Tolstoy-

“I have lived through much, and now I think I have found what is needed for happiness. A quiet secluded life in the country, with the possibility of being useful to people to whom it is easy to do good, and who are not accustomed to have it done to them; then work which one hopes may be of some use; then rest, nature, books, music, love for one’s neighbor-such is my idea of happiness. And then, on top of all that, you for a mate, and children, perhaps-what more can the heart of man desire?”
